If You Want To License Your Music Then Think Twice About This!

by Sebastian Samuels

Here’s something to think about if you want to make sure you make money from licensing your music.

In the past at the production company I used to work at I was in charge of finding tracks for projects we were producing or finalizing. These would either be commercials from the different advertising companies we had as clients or they were corporate videos for so many different companies that came through our doors or even some documentary client projects.

We had access to many different musicians, music licensing companies and many production music libraries which were all sent to us and built up over the many years the company was in existence. We were always on the hunt last minute to find the perfect track for a project. Once we found the perfect track or tracks we’d obviously get in touch with the company the track or tracks came from and finalize and license the music. A lot of times though the musician or the company would raise a big stink about the rate or budget we had for the project and it would kind of get ugly and we’d leave and move on with another track from a different company or band. Later because of that little situation we had with the company or the musician we would avoid contacting that company or musician the track or tracks came from and never licensed any music from them. That’s just the way it was … it leaves a bad taste.

So what I’m getting at is don’t turn down any potential licenses because you think the rate or budget is too low. If you do that the client or company will not come back to you another time because the client is so busy and they don’t want to deal with problems they just want things to go as smoothly and without any difficulties at all. So if the client comes to you and says she only has 400 dollars for a corporate video which will go on the internet and be shown at company meetings just take it for that rate. Each project is different, each company is different so you have to adapt to the way each company works and what they can afford for tracks.

Once you say yes to the client she’ll be happy and eventually come back and license something at a better budget or rate. Just make the client happy and you’ll end up making a lot of money from that client.

Also because there’s so much music out there you really can’t afford to say no because that client will never come back to you again they’ll just go to the other companies she has access to for music. Hope this helps all of you in some way and makes you more successful with your music licensing!

You should sign up for the A-Z of Music Licensing Program and go from there. It lists companies you can contact the companies to send your music to. Link:
