You Can Make Money Licensing Your Music!

by Sebastian Samuels

Everywhere you go, every corner you turn you hear music. Music is being played on your favorite TV show, on the latest movie hits, even incorporated in your kids toys. So music is an important part of our daily life. This is why there is so much opportunity to make money from your music.

Some of the places where you would hear licensed music is below.

TV
Films
Radio
Webisodes
Internet Programming
Corporate Videos
Podcasts
Documentaries
Advertising
Toys
Wedding Videos
Infomercials
Events/Conferences/Conventions
Background Use For Retail Spaces
Telephone On-Hold
Internet Advertising
Video Games

This is great news because there are so many places that you can start sending your music to to make a substantial income from your tunes. Or you can sign up with the many non-exclusive licensing companies and list your music with them and have the help you make the money from music licensing. I prefer to use the latter approach because they do all the shopping for you and you can concentrate on producing more and more music you can list with the music licensing companies. Because the more music you have the more chance you will have at licensing your music.

This does not mean that you will be successful right away. This all takes time and patience and there’s so much competition out there you just have to stick with it and not give up. You have to be patient and keep doing what you really love to do and produce the best quality music and send your music to as many places as you can. It takes a couple of big television licenses for example a commercial and the performance royalty checks could keep you going.

Always keep in mind to create the most unique and original music along with tracks that sound like what’s popular or on the charts because you never know when a client is looking to replace a very popular track and yours turns out to be the best replacement and it gets licensed to a film trailer. That kind of license can mean really big returns and excellent success.

So my conclusion is to not give up and keep at producing music and list your music with as many music licensing companies as you can so those companies can take your music and get it placed with productions that are listed above.

Exclusive Versus Non Exclusive Deal?

by Sebastian Samuels

Always go for the non-exclusive deal when it comes to signing your music with music licensing companies. I don’t get why folks have to sign an exclusive deal. Why? Why would you place your music with one company versus a hundred companies? That pretty much explains and answers it right there. Unless the company that you are signing with exclusively guarantees to licenses your music and you end up making thousands of dollars then there’s no question in mind that you should sign an exclusive deal with a licensing company.

Most companies are pretty fair and offer a 50/50 deal but recently I’ve heard that some companies like Pump Audio have changed their deal and are now offering a 65/35 deal in Pumps favor. Or if you sign an exclusive deal with Pump Audio then you get to do a 50/50 deal with them. Well I think that sucks and I would avoid that kind of a deal. I’ve heard from many musicians that when Pump Audio did this they decided to pull out or end up going exclusive. If I was a musician I would have left also I would never ever sign an exclusive deal. I would just go and sign with as many companies as I could. So that’s left a lot of musicians unhappy with Pump Audio and they feel that they’ve got screwed over because of this deal.

So if you are researching music licensing companies make sure you end up signing a non-exclusive deal and stick to the 50/50 deal all around which is pretty fair I think and nothing else. Good luck with your music licensing journey!
