Exclusive Versus Non Exclusive Deal?

by Sebastian Samuels

Always go for the non-exclusive deal when it comes to signing your music with music licensing companies. I don’t get why folks have to sign an exclusive deal. Why? Why would you place your music with one company versus a hundred companies? That pretty much explains and answers it right there. Unless the company that you are signing with exclusively guarantees to licenses your music and you end up making thousands of dollars then there’s no question in mind that you should sign an exclusive deal with a licensing company.

Most companies are pretty fair and offer a 50/50 deal but recently I’ve heard that some companies like Pump Audio have changed their deal and are now offering a 65/35 deal in Pumps favor. Or if you sign an exclusive deal with Pump Audio then you get to do a 50/50 deal with them. Well I think that sucks and I would avoid that kind of a deal. I’ve heard from many musicians that when Pump Audio did this they decided to pull out or end up going exclusive. If I was a musician I would have left also I would never ever sign an exclusive deal. I would just go and sign with as many companies as I could. So that’s left a lot of musicians unhappy with Pump Audio and they feel that they’ve got screwed over because of this deal.

So if you are researching music licensing companies make sure you end up signing a non-exclusive deal and stick to the 50/50 deal all around which is pretty fair I think and nothing else. Good luck with your music licensing journey!
